Camp HOPE

CAMP HOPE (Christian Appalachian Mountain Project, Helping Other People Enthusiastically) is a mission project for teenagers in Western Maryland. Teams of youth with adult leaders help people who are unable to maintain or repair their homes. The projects include such things as painting, roofing, replacing decks, building wheelchair ramps and others too numerous to list.

The youth work throughout the year to raise the funds necessary to pay for the materials needed for the job site and for their transportation, housing, and meals. The fund-raising events, retreat, and other gatherings help the youth learn to work together as a group. The repairs that are done are often life changing for the home owners and their appreciation is enormous. Campers, as well, experience life changing perspectives and return with stories of fellowship, laughter, and increased faith.
Campers begin their journey in 8th Grade and continue through 12th Grade.

If you have a youth who would be interested in joining our team please contact the Church Office for further details – (410) 442-2020.
Boy Scout Explorer – Sea Scout Troop
Welcome aboard to the fun and adventure of Sea Scouting. A program combining the tradition of the past with the technology of the future. Whether you look to the sea for a career or lifelong hobby, Sea Scouting is for you!

Sea Scouts is a coeducational program offered to young adults between the ages of 13-21. Like you, they love boats and the water, want to learn the skills of the sailor, can work on a team but set personal goals too and they have fun doing it. Whether it is on a bay, a river, a lake, or the ocean, Sea Scout groups – called “ships” – have been established all across the country. Ships provide opportunities for adventure and offer exciting challenges that you won’t find anywhere else.

Sea Scout Ship Crew 361 meets Tuesdays 7:30 PM at Saint James UMC.

Alcoholic’s Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous® is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

Meetings are held Wednesdays at 7:15 pm in the Social Hall.

Neighbors in Need Neighbors in Need, in conjunction with the Christian Services of Howard County adopt three or more families from Howard County that need our aid around the Holidays. We request that our adopted families make up a wish list and we, in turn, get what is needed to make their Christmas dreams come true. The program has been running for the past five years. During this time we at Saint James have made Christmas come true for over 21 families.
ESCAPE Ministries
A volunteer non-profit emergency needs organization serving southern Carroll and northern Howard counties.
E.S.C.A.P.E Ministries (Enabling Social and Church Advocacy for People Enrichment) was formed in 1988 by a group of concerned churches responding to the needs of residents in southern Carroll & northern Howard counties. Since the staff is entirely volunteer, 98% of all the donations go toward financial assistance for evictions, utility turn-offs, fuel oil, prescriptions, food, etc. Eighteen member Churches provide donations along with strong support from the Residents of Fairhaven, service clubs, and individuals.
E.S.C.A.P.E. Ministries has a 501(c)3 nonprofit status making all donations tax deductible. The “His Table” free bag lunch program was started in 1994 for anyone in the area who needs a lunch. Seventy lunches are distributed every Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., at the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Sykesville. E.S.C.A.P.E. Ministries has assisted over 4,000 families according to this scripture: “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.” – Galatians 6:2

Mission & Ministry (M&M)
The Saint James M&M works on building a welcoming bridge between our church and the public, as well as bringing our congregational members together to experience acceptance and spiritual growth.
We do this through various activities such as mailing out seasonal community post cards with information about our church activities, advertisements placed in our local newspapers, displays of activities present during community events, and organizing Fellowship Time after worship services. We do these things so that we can provide a warm and accepting spirit within our church.
The Evangelism Committee meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM.
